Happy Birthday To Me

I'd like to wish myself a Happy Birthday.
Even after all this time, I'm uncertain about how to feel on my birthday. Often, when people find out my birthday is on 9/11, they respond with, "Oh, I'm sorry," as if I should feel guilty about it. But it was my day first. I'm deeply sorry for the terrorist attacks and the lives lost, including some of my friends. However, I refuse to let the terrorists ruin my day. I'll honor those who perished, but I will celebrate my birthday. If that's wrong, then I apologize. It's just how I feel.
I remember when my hometown used to hold its Fall Festival on my birthday weekend. My mom was delighted to have the day off, avoiding walking in the parade while nine months pregnant. I always thought it was special because the town seemed to be celebrating my birthday with a parade and games. How amazing is that for a kid? I vividly recall the day of the attacks. I was living and working in Richmond, VA, at the time. We watched the horrific news unfold that morning. I dispatched drivers heading to Washington, DC, and they described the plane hitting the Pentagon on the radio as they watched it happen. The entire I80 corridor was shut down. We lost friends. It was a dreadful day. I had plans to go out with friends and family, but instead, I stayed home and somberly celebrated with a cupcake.
Since then, I've marked my birthday with both sorrow and pride. I mourn the loss of my friends, but I detest the terrorists more and refuse to let them take the day from me. So, as an early wish to myself, I wish for a very happy birthday and hope everyone experiences a day of peace and reflection.
